I generally try too keep out of the food fight that is American politics, but this site is just too funny.

    What I learned this week:

    1. What to do when a Sun Fire 6800 actually catches on fire.

    2. The stock market does not close on Columbus Day.

    3. The WWE world headquarters is down the street from my apartment.

    4. The CMU Alumni Association seems to think I live in San Francisco.

    Bored
Wow, I can't believe I haven't updated this thing since August. Oh how the time does fly.

So this is my first weekend 'On Call.' I am sitting at home on a Saturday night being 'On Call.' The first thing I'm gonna do at work on Monday is figure out who is actually looking up Dow Jones reports at midnight on a Saturday night. Haven't quite figured out what I'm gonna do after that though.

On a slightly different note, I've become addicted to Yahoo Poker. This is thanks to the frequent re-runs of the World Poker Tour on The Travel Chanel. Let me tell you, online entertainment at it's best. I'm only up about $50 fake dollars right now, but I'm up! Las Vegas here I come!

Saw Kill Bill last night. Still having mixed feelings about that. I'm going to keep an open mind and wait to see the second half before passing judgment, but things aren't looking good.

What to do when the lights go out
Props to the bars of Stamford for having plenty of candles and ice on hand. They were more prepared than any of the other businesses in the area, that's for sure :-)

    Dates are cool
A highly entertaining waste of 'time.' I particularly enjoyed learning that in the year 2^1E180, as there are only about 1E80 particles in the observable universe, it has by now become impossible to write the date.

    Frugal WiFi
Did you know that for $6.45 you can make a pretty damn good 802.11b wireless antenna out of an old pringles can?

Rock on with my bad 802.11g self
So I still don't have any furniture yet, but the high speed wireless ethernet is flowing like money. Expect a future live journal post from the bathroom.

Dan and Avi are coming to visit tomorrow on their way back to Pittsburgh. My first guests and all I have to offer them is high speed internet access. Somehow, I don't think they will be disappointed :-)

    Go GAP!
I found the local yuppy mall today. Let me put it this way, the bottom 4 floors and top two floors of the building are all parking. It was insane. I've never been in a mall that big before (granted I'm not the most traveled person in the world, it was still big). There were several people in the food court using their hands free cell phone adapters so they could eat and talk at the same time; something I have trouble doing in person let alone over the phone.

Does anyone remember the name of that web-based music sharing program that came out about a year ago? It came out right after Audio Galaxy shut down. I think it was spy something... or maybe it had the word ghost in the title.... or both? Now that I once again have a decent connection, I need to continue loading up my music server :-)

    Speaking of just borrowing...
Living without high speed Internet sucks. The landlord told me it would be a week or so before they would be able to hook up my connection. AND TODAY IT WAS DONE!!! GO INHOUSE T1! I no longer have to borrow my neighbor's wireless connection. It was a good day for apt-get upgrade.

Any way, the question now is 'Do I buy one of those out-of-the-box wireless router things?' or 'Do I just buy a PCI wireless card for my desktop machine and set up my own wireless network?'

Today I also learned there is a brewery in my building. All I need now is a mountain dew machine and I'll never have to leave!

Final lesson for the day: You know those proximity ID cards that seem to be all the rage now? Don't tape 3 of them together trying to simplify your life and expect the bundle to work at each location. It doesn't. And duct tape doesn't come off of plastic very well.

Jane! How do I work this crazy thing?!?
So I've finally got around to setting this thang up. Thank you to whom ever in the building has an open wireless connection... This entry (and various apt-get upgrades) have been made possible by him/her.

First day of work today... Lots of cool people very laid back. I think I'll be able to fit in just fine (even though they all use Windows). The apartment is still unfurnished. I've got my 70's style inflatable chair and a Coleman air mattress from Wal*Mart (go Wal*Mart).

Let me tell you a little something about VMS. It is WEIRD. I use all capital letters because that is just how the file system works (at least the one I used today). It's kind of cool cause it's a versioning file system, but that's about where the coolness stops. I definitely see why people gave up on it for the various *nix. Hopefully it won't be that bad though, Emacs still seems to work the same way :-\ The server I was programming on today had 16 Alpha processors and 64 Gigs of RAM. A very kick ass machine, aside from the OS.

If anyone knows of a good bank in the Connecticut area, please let me know. I hear the First Union/Wachovia conglomeration is a sound institution...
